Why Auto Repair Costs Are Rising — And What That Means for You

jake • October 6, 2025

A closer look at the factors driving up repair prices and what it means for Muskegon drivers.

Have you noticed your repair bill feels higher than it used to be? You’re not imagining it. According to CNN’s recent reporting, auto repair costs jumped 5% in a single month (July → August) — the largest one-month increase on record — and they’re up 15% compared to last year.

At The Garage MKG, we’ve seen the same trends firsthand. The question is: why is this happening, and what can you do about it?

The Factors Behind Rising Repair Costs

1. Tariffs & Imported Parts
Even if you’re driving an American-made vehicle, chances are the part you need is coming from overseas. Since May, imported parts have been hit with a
25% tariff, and that cost gets passed along in repairs. Manufacturers have absorbed some of this cost to keep new car sticker prices steady — but repair parts don’t have the same cushion. (Not much we can do about that!)

2. Older Vehicles on the Road
With new car prices higher than ever, many drivers are choosing to repair rather than replace. Cars on the road are older than ever — the average vehicle age is now
12.8 years.

Older cars don’t just need more repairs; they’re also harder to work on.

  • Rust makes every job take longer, and often requires replacing extra parts that break during disassembly.
  • Hidden issues make diagnosing problems more difficult.
  • A “simple repair” can snowball quickly when the car has a decade-plus of wear and tear.

Bottom line: the older the car, the more time and parts may be required — and that translates directly into higher costs.

3. A Shortage of Skilled Technicians
This one hits close to home. I started as a technician myself, and I’ve been outspoken about the need to improve pay and working conditions in our industry. For too long, being a mechanic was seen as “blue collar grunt work.” But today’s technicians are highly trained professionals working on vehicles that are more advanced than ever.

At The Garage MKG, I’ve made it a point to pay my team more than they can earn at any other independent shop in town. That’s good for them, their families, and their future — but it also means labor rates rise as the industry catches up to reality. Honestly, rising wages aren’t a bad thing: they’re long overdue for a career path that demands both brains and skill.

Labor costs now make up about 60% of a typical repair bill, and wages for auto technicians rose 7% in a single year (2023–24). With fewer young people entering the trade, shops are competing for skilled workers, which drives labor rates higher.

4. Complex Vehicle Technology
Modern cars are more than just engines and wheels. Sensors, cameras, safety systems, and electronics all add layers of complexity. Even something as routine as replacing a
tie rod isn’t simple anymore.

Ten years ago, you could swap it out, do an alignment, and call it done. Today? That same job may require calibration of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) like lane keeping or adaptive cruise control.

Cars are rolling computers, and fixing them often requires specialized tools, extra steps, and manufacturer-specific procedures. Each of those adds time — and cost — to even the “basic” jobs.

Why This Matters for You

  • Sticker shock is real: Don’t be surprised if repairs that cost $800 a few years ago are now closer to $1,200.
  • Delays are common: With supply chain and labor shortages, parts may take longer to arrive, and shops stay booked out.
  • Maintenance matters more than ever: Small, preventative services can help you avoid major breakdowns that come with hefty bills.

At The Garage MKG, we believe transparency is key. Here are a few ways you can keep control:
